Seven thin campaigns became one prospecting and one retargeting campaign with real budget behind them
The Challenge
The account had seven campaigns running at once: a top, middle, and bottom of funnel campaign for each month, a birthday sale, and a blowout, most of them with a few hundred dollars behind them. Nothing had enough budget to learn. In October the account spent $1,736 and returned $2,025 in purchase value, a 1.17 return on ad spend. The store did $26,167 that month across its online store, point of sale, and membership program.
What We Did
- Collapsed seven campaigns into two. One prospecting campaign to find new buyers and one retargeting campaign to close the people who had already looked. Budget stopped being spread across seven ad sets that each learned nothing.
- Put real budget behind the season. Black Friday ran as two campaigns with $3,904 for the month instead of seven thin ones. That window alone produced 951 adds to cart, 174 checkouts started, and 125 purchases.
- Scaled what held. By February spend was $8,143 a month, split between prospecting and retargeting. The return went up as spend went up, not down: 21,355 landing page views, 3,072 adds to cart, 512 checkouts started, 355 purchases at $22.94 each.
The Outcome
October, before: $1,736 spent, 1.17 return on ad spend, $2,025 in purchase value.
December, 60 days in: $3,904 spent, 3.20 return on ad spend, $12,488 in purchase value, 125 purchases.
February: $8,143 spent, 4.40 return on ad spend, $35,854 in purchase value, 355 purchases.
On the Shopify side, total sales went from $26,167 in October to $153,923 across November, December, and January, about $51,000 a month.
Why it worked: an ad account with seven campaigns and a few hundred dollars each never leaves the learning phase. Two campaigns with a clear job each, prospecting and retargeting, give the algorithm enough signal to find buyers, and the budget can scale into the winner instead of being rationed across the field.
